This Saturday, Neighborland is co-sponsoring the city’s first-ever Night Market along with St. Claude Main Street (SCMS) and the local arts group Press Street. It will all be going down on the corner of St. Claude Avenue & Bartholomew St. in the Bywater, from 6pm to 10pm. The market will feature food vendors, drinks, original art, clothing, local craftspeople, homewares and live music.
Ever since Neighborland user Eli suggested that New Orleans have its own Night Market in Bayou St. John, we have been totally sold on the idea, and thinking about ways we could help Make it Happen. Around the same time, we heard that local grocer Canseco’s had been looking into opening a new store on a vacant lot situated on the corner of St. Claude Avenue and Bartholomew Street. The grocery store ended up falling through, so we were thrilled when the St. Claude Main Street organization recently approached us about surveying neighborhood residents and New Orleanians from across town about what could best be developed on the site.
With the help of a generous grant from the Louisiana Main Street Program, SCMS and Neighborland are teaming up to make a community member’s idea a reality, in service of drawing attention to the underutilized property and St. Claude Avenue as a whole. To this end, Neighborland will create an installation that allows people to submit their own ideas on site during the Night Market. The ideas submitted on site will be tied to the corner’s new Place page, which will continue to collect input over the course of the next month.
The event will also promote the area’s thriving art scene. The Night Market is being held adjacent to, and in coordination with, the St. Claude art galleries, who will be open for their “Second Saturday” gallery night. The market will immediately follow the N.O.L.A Open Studios event, which invites residents to explore the art spaces of New Orleans’ downtown neighborhoods.
The event will be ongoing from 6pm to 10pm, so make St. Claude & Bartholomew a stop on your Saturday Night tour. Live music by Bunga Bunga will begin at 6pm, and a DJ set will follow. For more information check out the event’s Facebook page.
We hope to see you there!
